The History of Philosophy

Research on the history of philosophy as well as teaching it are part of the basic orientation of philosophical and theological studies. Since there is no linear progress in knowledge generally agreed upon in philosophy—in contrast to other disciplines—(so that particular considerations by, for example, Aristotle can be as relevant for the present time as those by a modern philosopher), recalling philosophical theories and arguments as well as their inner interrelation is not of a merely historiographic character. Philosophical reflection does not stand on a foundation without the knowledge of that which has already been reflected upon. Of course, the opposite is also true: Mere knowledge of that which has already been reflected upon is no basis for independent philosophical reflection. Both disciplines, namely studying the history of philosophy and systematic philosophy, are part of a philosophy curriculum.

The Faculty of Theology in Paderborn offers an introductory cycle of lectures for students in their first year that gives a compact overview of decisive philosophical positions and arguments from antiquity to the present time. Special attention is paid to current questions of philosophy, against the background of which ancient, medieval and modern concepts are conveyed and discussed.
